Practical Ecology has been involved with a large number of successful projects throughout Victoria.  Our clients include most local councils, many government organisations, and large and small property owners.

Recent achievements include design and implementation works leading to two awards from Keep Australia Beautiful.  In the first, awarded to the City of Whitehorse for Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, Practical Ecology was responsible for:

  • Initial project design and fauna surveys;
  • Revegetation planting composition and schedules;
  • Planting works; and
  • Follow-up maintenance.

Melbourne Water, in "The Source", had the following to say about the project:

Taking pride in a local beauty spot

More than four years of planning and works to rehabilitate a section of creek within a key regional bushland park has won the City of Whitehorse a significant environmental award.

Melbourne Water, the Victorian Government's Stormwater Action Program, community and environment groups worked with the Council to convert the upstream end of Blackburn Lake from an eyesore into a sanctuary for birds and other local wildlife, and a valuable recreational asset for residents and visitors.

The collaborative project helped the Council take out a Keep Australia Beautiful City Pride Award for 2004.

The lake had been infested with willows and other weeds, and litter, industrial run-off and pollution spills had further degraded water quality.

The Council and Melbourne Water worked together to build sediment ponds and the Wurundjeri Walk wetlands, establishing aquatic and native plants as part of major revegetation works.

In the second Keep Australia Beautiful award, Practical Ecology (via the City of Whittlesea) was recognised for its works at the Growling Frog Golf Club, including the following:

  • Input on design and layout based on ecological values;
  • Design of native vegetation and environmental management plans;
  • Supervision of construction works to ensure protection of native vegetation; and
  • Documentation of the project.

In combination with other collaborators on the project, Practical Ecology recently received an award from the Stormwater Industry Association Victoria, as the winner of the category "Constructed WSUD on a greenfield".
